The concept:

Actively opening safety airbags are already standard in many types of sport. Now the idea has been successfully transferred into paragliding for the first time with the ARUS concept study. In an emergency, the pilot can activate the airbag unit, to supplement a compact foam protector, which already complies with the LTF requirements. Depending on the configuration, this allows us to achieve damping values between 10g-13g under the LTF standard. In addition, the side impact protection considerably improves the protective function.

A reserve is provided as a further feature. The main reserve is pulled independently from the harness using a pilot chute. This makes the deployment process considerably easier for the pilot.

Its implementation:

  • light rigid foam protector for permanent protection
  • active airbag system for optimised damping in an emergency
  • automatic application of the reserve chute
  • additional front reserve chute integrated for manual deployment

The system has already been successfully tested by our team pilots under actual flying conditions.
